In the name of gaming

As a pat on the back for becoming a pharmacist, and because I felt like it, I've gone ahead and ordered a new desktop PC. Previously I dwelt on building my very own gaming rig, but in an ironic twist my higher salary now also comes with less free time. So not much time to build one completely from scratch and err, probably not much time for games but I still want a gaming rig!

Therefore  I went the middle way and invested in a build from pcspecialist.co.uk. Behold:

Intel Core i5-2500k 4.6GHz (over clocked)
ASUS P8P67 motherboard
4GB DDR3 2133MHz RAM
Radeon HD 6950 graphics card
Corsair 650W PSU
Coolit ECO II C240 ALC cooler
Coolermaster CM690 Mk II case

Resisting the temptation to just pick the most impressive and expensive parts, and because my long term plan is to update this PC every once in a while (crack that baby open!), I did a little research first.

The graphics card has a glowing review from Techradar. No longer top of the line for Radeon but still incredible and with new cards coming out all the time, I plan on updating anyway. That means a hefty power supply, so throw in the Corsair. Plus, the overclocked CPU's going to get toasty too so the ECO II C240 will provide adequate cooling. Like the graphics card, the CPU's not top of the line but still very good. The price of overclocking is shorter life, and that highly versatile motherboard should allow room for updating.

Finally, a decent looking case. Few people give this much thought, but for me I wanted something that looks nice and not like a sci fi prop, would actually help the computer run well i.e. good ventilation; and because I'm thinking long term, a case that can accommodate new components in the future.

If you'll excuse me, I'm going to start browsing amazon. That's right, I'm looking at you Shogun 2. Deus Ex. Space Marine. Civilisation 5...
